Katherine Webb on Musburger’s remarks, ESPN apology, Dockett’s tweet

ESPN has apologized for Brent Musburger’s comments about Katherine Webb during the BCS national championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame, even though the beauty queen apparently did not find his words offensive.

“If he had worded it different and said we were hot, or sexy, or commented on our body parts, it would have been completely different,” Webb, the reigning Miss Alabama USA, told Esquire. “I didn’t take any offense to it, because I think it’s OK for a man to tell a woman that she’s beautiful, no matter what age.”

During the game’s broadcast, the 73-year-old Musburger gave Webb, who is dating Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, a lot of attention.

“You quarterbacks,” Musburger said. “You get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman.”

ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys later tweeted an apology, saying that Musburger’s commentary “went too far.”

Webb may have found Musburger’s comments innocuous, but she was not so forgiving of another form of attention she received during the game.

After Webb’s face was flashed on national television, Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett tweeted his phone number to Webb and invited her to dinner and a strip club.

Shockingly, the advance did not work.

“That is not attractive at all,” Webb told the magazine. “It’s very disrespectful and AJ did not like it at all. Clearly, the news says I’m his girlfriend, so it’s very inappropriate for another guy to tweet me and purposely try and create drama.”

After Webb was shown on television, she went from having 562 Twitter followers on Christmas to having more than 237,000 followers as of Wednesday afternoon. Even Miami Heat superstar LeBron James apparently followed her for a while.

“People said he followed me, but apparently then unfollowed me on Twitter later, since he was getting so much flak about it,” Webb said. “I was talking to AJ’s mom about this earlier and none of this stuff matters to me. At the end of the day, I just want to be with him. That’s all.”

Webb said that she was unaware of how much attention that she and her Twitter account were getting during the game because her phone had died.

“I had absolutely no idea that the reporters had made a comment about me and [McCarron’s] mom,” Webb said. “We were both flattered and thought, ‘No way, that’s so cool.’ You know iPhone batteries are not the best ever.”
