Martin Jones relives Kings shootout victory over Ducks

Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi just had to pass along another Darryl Sutter story.

This one had to do with the NHL debut of Kings goalie Martin Jones. There was still a substantial buzz following his standout performance, winning against the Ducks on Tuesday and surviving a nine-round shootout. He shut down down all the Ducks, including captain Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

“It was funny the way Darryl told him he was going to play,” Lombardi said. “He tapped him on the shoulder after we beat St. Louis” on Monday.

“He was going by the bench and Darryl said ‘Get ready for tomorrow.’ That’s the way he found out.”

Jones, meanwhile, said Thursday that it was not the longest shootout he had endured. As a junior player with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, he said he went either 12 or 13 rounds.

And won.

But junior hockey is one thing. Stopping future Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne is another.

“I definitely knew it was him,” Jones said. “The crowd made sure that I knew. It was pretty loud in there. I just wanted to make that save, honestly. I just wanted to keep the guys in it. I knew we were going to get one eventually.”

That finally came from Kings left wing Dwight King. As the ninth shooter, King beat Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller with a quick shot.

“I know I’m nowhere near the top of the list for shooters, so I was just sitting there enjoying it,” King said. “I’m happy. I could sit at the 10 [spot], or nine all day. Hide in the weeds.”

Defenseman Drew Doughty was lamenting his attempt. A lost opportunity, he feared. Doughty had been lobbying Sutter and the coach told Doughty that he should have used him in the recent shootout against San Jose.

“I said, ‘Yeah, of course,’ ” Doughty said. “I was ready to go. I wanted to go. I want to be put in those situations every time. So I was pretty disappointed I didn’t score because I probably won’t go for a while.

“I thought I made a good move. I almost had him. It [stinks], but whatever. I love those situations. I hope he throws me back in there.”

He won’t stop the lobbying, however.

“I wish I had scored really bad,” Doughty said. “I got it underneath him. I just didn’t get it enough underneath him. I thought it was a good move. I’ve got some other stuff I can try.”

“Jonsey was good. See that’s the thing. I score on him every time in practice every time when I shoot at him. I don’t know what Anaheim was doing wrong or what he was doing right.”
