George Halas in first group of Rose Bowl All-Century finalists

George Halas, Patty Driscoll and Neil Snow have been selected as the first three finalists for this season’s Rose Bowl All-Century Class.

The three players were chosen for the decades of the 1900s and 1910s. The first Rose Bowl was held in 1902 and discontinued before resuming in 1916.

Snow scored the first touchdown in Rose Bowl history during Michigan’s 49-0 romp over Stanford in 1902.

Driscoll completed four of eight passes for 77 yards to help lead Great Lakes Navy to a 17-0 win over Mare Island Marines in the 1919 game.

Halas, who was a collegiate star at Illinois and coached the Chicago Bears, played in the 1919 Rose Bowl as a member of Great Lakes Navy during a time when college teams were depleted because of World War 1. Halas had a 45-yard touchdown reception in the 1919 win and was selected player of the game.

The Rose Bowl, celebrating its 100th game, is choosing a top player or coach from each decade and also the top player and coach for the century. A panel of judges was chosen by the Rose Bowl and Football Writers Assn. of America. The team will be announced at a news conference Dec. 8.
