2014 Sochi Olympics will be a little less festive for Australians

Australians are known to drink a beer or two -- or three -- but they won’t be drinking any at the 2014 Sochi Games.

National team officials have declared a policy change that will render their section of the Olympic village dry when the competition begins in early February.

“We want to create an environment where it is all about performance,” Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman said.

Two years ago at the London Games there were reports of drunkeness and rowdy behavior in the Australian quarters. Apparently, athletes who had finished with their events were partying late and keeping teammates awake.

Chesterman said that incidents of carousing in London may have been overblown but added that officials wanted to give every athlete on the Sochi team the best-possible chance to succeed.

Australia plans impose a similar ban at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Alcohol wasn’t the only problem for the Aussies in 2012. Swimmer Emily Seebohm blamed her obsession with Twitter and Facebook after she narrowly missed winning a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke.

There has been no word of a social media ban.
