There’s a good reason Tim Tebow was working out at UCLA this week

It might seem random that NFL quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Philip Rivers were in Westwood this week working out with UCLA’s Noel Mazzone, the Bruins’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The picture becomes a little clearer when you realize that all three – Denver’s Tebow, San Diego’s Rivers and Mazzone – are represented by the same agent, Jimmy Sexton. What’s more, Minnesota’s Christian Ponder, another Sexton client, is scheduled to work out with Mazzone next week.

“Now that I’m with CAA, I spend a lot of time out here,” said Sexton, who also represents UCLA Coach Jim Mora. “Rivers and I were already going to be out here; he came up [Thursday] and worked out. Tebow’s up here doing some stuff. So it just worked out perfect where Noel’s right there at UCLA and they were able to work out.

“There will be a decent amount of guys coming out, back and forth.”

Some might call that a tidy bit of cross-promotion. But Sexton said it’s only logical to reunite Tebow, Rivers and Ponder with Mazzone.

“He was offensive coordinator for Rivers at NC State his senior year. He and Philip have a longstanding relationship,” the agent said. “He was Tebow’s coach coming out of college to help him with his mechanics getting ready for the draft, helped him go in the first round. He was also Ponder’s coach last year coming out in the draft too.

“Now that’s he’s at UCLA and it’s pretty weather in February and a good place to work out, that’s what they’re doing.”

On a conference call arranged by UCLA this week, Mazzone said that Tebow is “obviously a guy that wants to get better and he wants to kind of become good at his craft and his craft is being an NFL quarterback, just like Philip Rivers.”

Mora said it’s a feather in UCLA’s cap in terms of recruiting that those pros are working out with Mazzone.

“Who wouldn’t want to be coached by a guy who is coaching Philip Rivers, Tim Tebow and Christian Ponder?” he said.

Then again, USC might get some of that action too.

Sexton also represents Lane Kiffin.
