Bob and Mike Bryan win 12th major doubles title at U.S. Open

NEW YORK -- Bob and Mike Bryan, the 34-year-old twin brothers from Camarillo, won their fourth U.S. Open men’s doubles title Friday. It was also their 12th major championship, tying them with John Newcombe and Tony Roche.

The brothers came to New York on an Olympic high. Their goal for this season had been to win a gold medal, something they’d never accomplished. Now they have a gold and another U.S. Open title.

The second-seeded brothers beat fifth-seeded Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek decisively, 6-3, 6-4. Paes and Stepanek had beaten the Bryans in the finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.

The Bryans have won at least one of each of the four major doubles titles. Their fourth win here also ties the Bryans for most U.S. Open victories, with Stan Smith and Bob Lutz.

“We had to play our best tennis against these guys,” Mike said. “Leander is like a fine wine. He gets better with age.”

Bob said this year has been fun because he has traveled with his baby daughter, Micaela, and his wife, Michelle.

“Traveling all over the world with them has been great,” Bob said.
