Friday's multi-sport college and local roundup: Poquoson's Tyler strikes out 17 to lead Hokies past JMU in softball

COLLEGES: Softball: Virginia Tech junior Maggie Tyler, a Poquoson High alumna, struck out a career-high 17 batters Friday as the Hokies nipped James Madison 3-2 in eight innings. Tyler's strikeouts were the most by a Tech pitcher since Angela Tincher's 19 against Florida in her final game at the 2008 Women's College World Series. Baseball: On a day of many season openers, Apprentice School surged in its final three innings at bat to overwhelm Thomas Nelson Community College 16-5 at War Memorial Stadium.
