USGA: 18th hole at final round of U.S. Open will be par-5

The USGA called a mulligan and will play the 18th hole on Sunday as a par-5. The plan had been to alternate days, using Chambers’ Bay closing hole as a par-4 on Friday and Sunday, even though the hole -- and especially its green -- were designed to play as a par-5. But citing a wind shift, USGA executive director Mike Davis decided Sunday morning to play the opening hole a par-4 and the finishing hole as a par-5. Davis likely took heed of Jordan Spieth saying after Saturday’s round that he might play down the first fairway to avoid the bunkers on 18.
