Palos half marathon boosts special-rec program

Cora Umecker, a special-education teacher at Richards High School in Oak Lawn, isn't leaving funding for special-recreation programs entirely in the hands of politicians. The 46-year-old runner will participate in Sunday's eighth annual First Midwest Half Marathon in Palos Heights as a charity runner to support the South West Special Recreation Association, an Alsip-based organization that provides activities for special-needs youth and adults.
