Scuba diving in the Yucatán Peninsula's spectacular cenotes, Caribbean

Our scuba group plopped into the cenote and slipped below the surface into a spectacular light show of wavering, laser-like sunbeams that sliced through the crystal clear water. They reminded me of the northern lights and were just the beginning of the visual treats my family and I would experience in the Yucatán Peninsula. Many of these cenotes — limestone sinkholes — are connected to huge, freshwater caverns filled with stalagmites and icicle-like stalactites created tens of thousands of years ago when the seas were significantly lower and the caves well above water. Though not for everyone, a guided scuba trip in a cenote is something I would recommend for gutsy...
