San Diego pulls out all the stops for kids for the month of October. Theme parks and museums offer free admission (with paying adults), and hotels offer kids-eat-free options too. Yes, the freebies are on when kids are back in school, but there's always the weekend.

The deal

Go to the Join the Kidvasion web page and you'll see all the offers for October. You can also search on particular attractions to see whether they're included. Below are some of San Diego's most popular attractions and how some of the savings stack up.

See the meerkats (above) and other animals at the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park. Tickets are free for children 3 to 11 during the month of October. Tickets for kids usually cost $38 each.

Of course, children must be accompanied by an adult; single-day admission for adults costs $48.

Seaworld offers one free ticket for children 3 to 9 years old (usually $50 to $59) for each adult ticket you purchase. Adult admission costs $89. The freebie for one child with an adult ticket also applies to Breakfast With Shamu ($26 for adults) and Dolphin Interaction ($215 for adults).

At Belmont Park, kids 12 and younger receive an unlimited ride wristband (usually $17.95) for the Big Dipper and other attractions. You must buy one adult ticket ($28.95) for each free ticket.

There are other perks too: free laser tag (adult ticket required) and a free cotton candy at the Sweet Shoppe with the purchase of an ice cream cone. Print out the Kids Play and Ride Free coupon to get the deal.

Marston House Museum & Gardens

Civic leader George Marston built this beautiful Arts and Crafts home and gardens on five acres. It's furnished with period pieces, and may make a nice dip back in time. Two children 12 and younger receive free admission (usually $7 each) with a paying adult ($15).

Details

Families that have been to San Diego frequently may want to look for some different activities to take advantage of. For example, they can score free tickets for kids on Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner as well as Hornblower Cruises and gondola rides.

Things to check when you're on the Join the Kidvasion website: Each attraction has its own age range to qualify for the free kid ticket. Also read the fine print on offers to see how many kids get in free with an adult ticket. Lastly don't forget to print out the coupons to present at the attractions that require them.
