Let ‘Star Trek’s’ George Takei lead you on a zero-gravity flight over Las Vegas

You can’t join actor George Takei on the Starship Enterprise, but maybe you’d like to take a zero-gravity spin with him over Las Vegas?

The man best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in the original “Star Trek” TV series will lead 20 explorers on a zero-G adventure in August.

You won’t be orbiting the Earth, but you will experience bursts of weightlessness – 20 to 30 seconds at a time – as a modified Boeing 727 performs a series of arcs and turns in the sky. The plane makes 15 float-worthy “parabolic maneuvers” during the flight.

The idea is to “float, flip and soar” just like astronauts do, according to operator Gravity Adventure Corp.’s website.

The entire experience – from check-in and beyond – takes about five hours. There are only 20 seats available for the Takei flight.

This experience isn’t for the faint-hearted -- or the budget-minded. The $6,500 ticket – tax bumps it to $6,825 – includes an opportunity to mingle with Takei, a flight suit, photos and video, and a party described as a “regravitation celebration.”

Virginia-based Zero Gravity Corp. says it is the sole Federal Aviation Administration-approved operator to offer “weightless” flights to the public.

The Aug. 4 adventure will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of “Star Trek,” which launched on television on Sept. 8, 1966.

Takei played Hikaru Sulu in the television show and reprised the role in six feature films.

For those who can’t make it to Vegas, Zero-G offers flights from other cities around the country, including L.A., starting at $4,950.
