Las Vegas: Trivia quiz is the place to be if you have the right stuff

Share

Brainiacs will gather in Las Vegas next month for the Trivia Championships of North America, and here’s a twist: Scouts from two TV networks will be on the prowl for potential game show contestants.

The third annual championships at the Tropicana Aug. 9-11 will pit whiz kids against one another in a variety of contests, such as “drink while you think” pub quizzes and Knodgeball, a patented blend of knowledge and dodgeball.

How would you do in such a challenge? Here’s a representative question, provided by Quizzing North America, the contest organizer:

“Emma Lazarus was born on this day (July 22) 164 years ago. Her most famous poem, ‘The New Colossus,’ is most famously inscribed on a plaque that sits where?” (See below for answer.)

Casting teams from NBC’s “Million Second Quiz” and GSN’s “The Chase” will be seeking people with the right mix of brains and spunk for future TV appearances.

Past winners from “Jeopardy!” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” will be taking part in various contests throughout the weekend.

Registration costs $169 until July 25 and $229 thereafter. The price includes entrance to all events, lunches on Friday and Saturday and reduced room rates at the Tropicana.

So here’s the answer to whether you could compete successfully: If you answered “At the base of the Statue of Liberty,” you could be a contender.
