Kings, defenseman Alec Martinez agree on two-year contract

Restricted free agent defenseman Alec Martinez has agreed to terms with the Kings on a two-year deal. I’m still working to get the financial terms and will update as soon as they’re available.

[Updated at 2:49 p.m.: Martinez will earn $737,500 per year for two years.]

Martinez, a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., had five goals, 16 points and 18 penalty minutes in 60 games as a rookie last season. He was +11 defensively and averaged 15 minutes and 16 seconds ice time per game.

He began the season with the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester (N.H.) but was recalled on Nov. 23 and stayed with the Kings the rest of the season.

He had filed for salary arbitration but with a new deal in place the Kings’ only scheduled arbitration hearing is with forward Brad Richardson, on July 21. Another restricted free agent, Trevor Lewis, did not file for arbitration.
