Getting settled into my nice, cool steel bench here at the Home Depot Center just before the start of the Division I contest between Corona Centennial and Concord De La Salle, I had an interesting conversation with former De La Salle player Stephen Lilly (1991-92).

It turns out Lilly is one of those Hollywood producer types, even though he spends most of his days roaming the liberal streets of Berkeley. Last January, Lilly and a former De La Salle teammate finished filming a documentary chronicling the Spartans’ 2000 season titled, ‘Perfect Effort.’ The film takes a behind-the-scenes look at what De La Salle fans affectionately remember as ‘Year 9’ of the team’s 12-year, 151-game winning streak.

‘It tells the story of the Spartan philosophy through the eyes of the players,’ Lilly said. ‘We also look at [Bob] Ladouceur’s career. We show he’s a guy who is more dedicated to mentoring kids than winning games.’

Lilly and his production company, Team Films, is still looking for a distributor, but the movie can be purchased online. Check out www.perfecteffort.com for film clips and more background info.

Oh, and here’s the view from where I held my steelbench interview.
