This much is certain: St. Bonaventure running back Darrell Scott -- widely considered the highest-rated high school running back prospect in the nation –- is planning to unveil his collegiate choice on Wednesday during national signing day.

Unfortunately, it has taken a little while for the specifics of Scott’s big day to reach the ears of the St. Bonaventure football coaching staff.

Offensive line coach Roger Sonsini has had the often difficult task of holding Scott’s hand throughout the recruiting process. The retired Oxnard Police officer was by Scott’s side when he made his official visits to Texas and Colorado in November and has helped shield the 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect’s cell phone from constant media bombardment.

However, even Sonsini was a little out of the loop this week when Scott and his family made arrangements with ESPN to have Scott’s signing televised live on ESPNU from the ESPN Zone in Anaheim. The original plan had been to have the signing at the ESPN Zone in New York, and Sonsini said he hadn’t heard about the change of plans until Thursday. He finally confirmed the change with me, tonight.

When alerted of a possible venue change, Sonsini attempted to contact Scott all day Wednesday and even asked some of the St. Bonaventure football coaches if they had heard about plans for a West Coast signing.

“They all told me they hadn’t heard anything different from New York,” Sonsini said.

Of course, a sense of unpredictability may be one of the legacies of Scott’s high school career. From his surprise and controversial transfer from Moorpark to St. Bonaventure in the spring of 2007 to the whole guessing game surrounding his college recruitment, Scott has been enigma for a lot of people, on and off the field.

And his coaches, apparently, are no exception.

But at least one good thing came out of all this confusion: I’ll get to talk with Scott after his big, TV performance is over.
