Junior College BASEBALL : Valley Comes Back to Top Pierce, 12-7

Valley College exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning and three in the eighth to overcome a 7-1 deficit and defeat Pierce at home, 12-7, in a non-league game.

Pierce scored four runs in the second on a homer by right fielder Jim Bodack, an RBI double by Ross Hersh, and a two-run single by John Tannis. The Brahmas built the lead to 7-1 in the fourth when second baseman Tom Brandt singled in two runs and scored on a double by Steve Savage.

After pinch-hitter Howard Halen singled in two runs for the Monarchs to cut the margin to one, Bobby Hernandez tripled him home to tie the score and scored himself moments later on a single by Ron Dale.

Catcher Paul Cottrell collected his third hit in three trips in the eighth with a single that drove in the final two runs. He collectec 3 RBI for the day.

Valley improved its record to 2-3-1.

L.A. Mission 3, Moorpark 2

Shortstop Manny Alfaro singled in the winning run in the top of the seventh to help break L.A. Mission’s five-game losing streak in a non-league game at Moorpark.

Bob White pitched seven innings to gain his first win in three decisions while Mike Hansen retired the side with runners on first and third in the eighth and ninth for the save.

Bob Ayrault, who took the loss in relief, collected Moorpark’s only RBI with a double in the sixth.
