San Diego State Drops to 12th, But Beats UCSD

The San Diego State baseball team, ranked No. 7 nationally last week, has fallen out of the top 10 after losing three straight games to Arizona over the weekend in Tucson.

The Aztecs are ranked No. 12 in this week’s poll released Tuesday by Collegiate Baseball Magazine, however, they beat UC San Diego on Tuseday, 7-5, in a nonconference game at UCSD.

Mike Erb (3-0) pitched seven innings, striking out eight, to pick up the win for The Aztecs (8-3). Kevin Piper struck out three batters over the final two innings and earned his first save of the season.

Aztec designated hitter Steve Moscaret led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Shortstop Steve Montejano was two for five with one RBI. Dan Healy (0-1) was the losing pitcher for UCSD (8-4-1).

Mississippi State (2-0) is No. 1 in the poll this week, followed by Texas (7-2), Miami, Fla. (12-5), Arizona (19-3).
