Two workers were admitted to San Bernardino County Hospital after an explosion at a Union Carbide plant in the 5700 block of Airport Drive in Ontario, officials said. The explosion occurred when liquid hydrogen was being pumped from a large tank into a smaller tank and the seal of the smaller one exploded, Ontario Fire Department spokesman Bruce Erickson said. Melvin Osborn, 36, was in serious condition with second- and third-degree burns on his face and body and suffering from smoke inhalation, a hospital official said. Henry Lopez, 45, was admitted for observation for smoke inhalation.
