British pop stars, who raised millions of dollars with a Christmas record for the starving, have sponsored a shipping service to take relief supplies to famine victims in Ethiopia and Sudan.

The service would carry relief supplies bought by the stars, who sang together under the name Band Aid, but would also provide space for supplies from international relief agencies, a spokesman said last night.

A ship renamed Band Aid 1 will sail from Britain for Port Sudan and Assab on the Red Sea on Friday.
