Followers of Doonesbury undoubtedly recall the comic strip’s series not long ago about the ordinance in Palm Beach, Fla., requiring the hired help to register with the police and carry ID cards.
Well, it seems that the state of Florida was so embarrassed by Garry Trudeau’s drawings that the Legislature in Tallahassee is about to enact a law making it illegal for a city to do such a thing. And it’s high time they did it, too. As matters now stand, servants in Palm Beach have to be fingerprinted as a condition of holding their jobs.
“The entire nation has been made aware of an ugliness we did not know existed,” said Jim Hargrett, a Florida solon supporting the measure.
Doonesbury should be commended for setting things right in Florida. When is the last time a cartoon got a law passed?
