NHL Roundup : Chicago’s Luck Still Is All Bad

The Chicago Black Hawks’ luck during the early season has been almost all bad. It didn’t change Sunday night at Chicago when they faced the Philadelphia Flyers.

After fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game, the Black Hawks lost the game on a fluke goal some eight minutes into the final period. Goalie Murray Bannerman stopped a shot from the point, but the puck went up in the air, Brian Propp hit it with his stick and it caromed off a Black Hawk into the net.

The goal, credited to Propp of the Flyers, broke a 2-2 tie. The Flyers went on to score two more goals to gain a 5-2 victory. The Black Hawks are 1-4-1.

“The puck is not bouncing right for us,” said Troy Murray, whose goal late in the second period tied the score. “We have hit posts, missed open nets and now this happens. There is some consolation, we are beginning to play better. The luck has to change.”

Propp, who also scored the Flyers’ second goal, set up Dave Brown for the fourth goal at 11:24 of the final period and Dave Poulin ended the scoring into an empty net in the closing seconds.

Winnipeg 8, Calgary 5--Going into this game at Winnipeg, the Jets had converted only 3 of 33 power-play opportunities. Through the first period it went to 3-for-37 and the Jets trailed, 2-1.

But once Jet defenseman Dave Babych broke the ice early in the second period, the Jets regained the power-play touch and scored three more goals with a man advantage.

The victory evened the Jets’ record at 3-3 and moved them into third place, ahead of the Flames, in the Smythe Division.

New York Rangers 4, Vancouver 3--The Rangers blew a 3-0 lead at New York but rookie Kelly Miller ended the Canucks’ rally and the Rangers’ four-game losing streak by scoring the winning goal at 4:15 of the last period.

It was Miller’s second goal of the game and also the second of his brief career. It came after the Canucks had scored twice in the first three minutes of the final period.

The Rangers are now 2-4, while the Canucks fell to 3-2-1.
