Before his team’s match against Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Cal State Los Angeles women’s tennis Coach Tom Yamaguchi urged all of his players to keep track of their scores because the scoreboards were missing.

Three hours later, Yamaguchi wished that the score hadn’t been kept at all. CSUN routed the Golden Eagles, 8-1, at CSULA to clinch a tie for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship.

“This match had a lot of importance for us,” said CSUN’s Missy Conn. “We have a goal that we don’t want to lose in league.”

The Lady Matadors (23-1, 8-0) have won six consecutive matches and are ranked No. 1 on the West Coast by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. CSULA dropped to 4-7 and 14-11. CSUN must win only one of its remaining four conference matches to win the title outright.

“This match was a real tribute to their depth,” Yamaguchi said.
