Holtz Likes What He Sees in Spring Game
Lou Holtz, Notre Dame’s new head football coach, said Saturday: “We’ll be a solid football team next fall.”
Holtz, who replaced Gerry Faust after Faust had coached the Irish for five mediocre seasons, commented after the Irish had completed their annual Blue-Gold spring game, in which the Gold defeated the Blue, 24-17, before a crowd of 32,071. There were 11 fumbles in the game.
Quarterback Steve Beuerlein, who threw two interceptions, passed for two Blue touchdowns, hitting Milt Jackson for 44 yards and Reggie Ward for 17 yards.
Holtz said Beuerlein would be his No. 1 quarterback and hinted that Tim Brown might be at tailback. “He’s as fine a talent as I’ve been around,” Holtz said.
