Brykt Wins Next-to-Last Stage, but Hinault Is Close to Bike Victory

Stefan Brykt, 22, scored his first victory as a professional Saturday when he won the 105-mile Morgul-Bismarck road race, the next-to-last stage of the Coors International bicycle race.

Brykt attacked going into the final 13-mile lap, on a steep hill known as “the wall.” He had been with a group of six leaders but in the final lap took off alone and finished about 2 minutes in front, with a time of 4 hours 6 minutes 23 seconds.

Petr Ugrumov of the Soviet Union was second in 4:08:36, winning a field sprint just ahead of Davis Phinney, who finished with the same time.

In the women’s Morgul-Bismarck stage, which was 39 miles, West Germany’s Ute Enzenhauer was first to cross the finish line, followed by Maria Canins and Nadegeda Kibardina of the Soviet Union. All received a time of 1:35:24.

The overall race leaders were still French riders Bernard Hinault and Jeannie Longo.

Both leads seemed secure going into today’s circuit race in North Boulder Park. The women will ride 33 miles and the men 61.

Greg LeMond was second overall, 1 minute 26 seconds behind Hinault. Phil Anderson was third, 1:52 behind the leader, and Andy Hampsten was fourth, 3:55 back.

Inga Benedict was 1 minute 20 seconds behind Longo in the women’s standings. Benedict had hoped to make up time in the Morgul-Bismarck but was penalized 15 seconds for not wearing official numbers. She finished 23rd Saturday in 1:39:22. Longo, who came in 14th, received the same time.

One racer who did make up time--4 minutes 18 seconds--was Canins. Her second-place finish Saturday pushed her into third place overall, 2:41 behind Longo. She pushed Susan Ehlers into fourth place.
