An Acton man believed responsible for a three-car accident near Palmdale early Saturday that left two men dead and several injured was arrested several hours later on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving when he sought medical treatment at a Sylmar hospital, police said.

The man, Daniel Reynaga, 21, drove across the center lane of Sierra Highway near Barrel Springs Road and collided with a car carrying four passengers, California Highway Patrol officer Mike Kerr said.

Reynaga, who sought treatment for his injuries at Olive View Medical Center on Saturday afternoon, was arrested by authorities who acted on a tip.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 22-year-old Palmdale man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Kerr said. A 25-year-old passenger whose hometown is unknown, died several hours later at the Antelope Valley Medical Center, he said.

The names of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families, Kerr said.

Two other passengers in the second car were treated for injuries at the Palmdale Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. Edward Carpenter, 67, is listed in good condition, and Sandra Ramos, 18, is listed in serious condition, the spokeswoman said.

Jose Reynaga, 22, of Acton, and Manuel Bustillo, 43, of Van Nuys, both passengers in Reynaga’s car, were arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving at the scene pending positive identification of who was actually driving the vehicle. The men were treated for minor injuries, Kerr said.

A third car carrying two Palmdale women crashed after the first collision. The two, Mirna Campos, 22, and Maria Corral, 27, were treated for minor injuries and released, a Palmdale Medical Center spokeswoman said.

Daniel Reynaga is being held in the jail ward of Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, police said.
