More than 70 animal rights demonstrators were arrested during protests at two University of California campuses, but no injuries were reported. In Berkeley, police arrested 44 of about 100 protesters conducting a sit-in outside University Hall, administrative center for the nine-campus system, a university spokesman said. Protest leaders said the groups aimed to stop what he termed cruel and abusive treatment of animals in scientific research. Three of those arrested in Berkeley were juveniles released without being booked; 38 were cited for trespassing and released, and three were booked for investigation of trespass and interfering with an officer. All the charges are misdemeanors. At UCLA, 27 of more than 100 demonstrators were arrested on similar charges after they chained themselves to a door at UCLA Medical Center, campus officials said.
