Economists predict the Fed will cut interest rates.

The Federal Reserve, which has helped push interest rates down to the lowest levels of this decade, stands ready to act again if there is not further strengthening in economic growth, economists predicted. “A discount rate cut is medicine the central bank is ready to administer at any time the patient needs it,” said Allen Sinai, chief economist for Shearson Lehman Bros. in New York. David Wyss, an economist with Data Resources Inc. of Lexington, Mass., said the economy was likely to strengthen further in the final three months of the year but will drop substantially in early 1987 because of the impact of the new tax law. Because of this weakness, he predicted the next discount rate cut would come early next year.
