City Franklin 33, Garfield 14--Ricky Lopez completed 17 of 24 passes for 305 yards, including scoring throws of 68, 30, 12 and 10 yards, in the Freeway League game at Wilson High. Cusberto Gray had four receptions for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the win over league champion Garfield, Franklin tied for second place with Locke at 3-2 and was 7-2 overall. Garfield is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Los Angeles 21, Roosevelt 0--Quarterback Shato Blake threw for three touchdowns as the Romans clinched the Eastern League title at Los Angeles. Blake completed a 45-yard touchdown pass play to Adrian Davis in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead, and threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Darnell Gray for a 14-0 lead at halftime. Blake hooked up with Gray again in the fourth quarter, this time on a 42-yard touchdown pass play. Los Angeles is 7-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the Eastern League. Roosevelt is 4-5, 2-3.

Locke 41, Narbonne 20--Junior Darian Hagan carried the ball 13 times for 106 yards, including a touchdown run of 55 yards, in a Freeway League game at Narbonne. Hagan, the City’s leading rusher, finished the regular season with 1,216 yards in 128 carries. Also, he completed 6 of 11 passes in the game, all to wide receiver Tim Thomas, for 147 yards. Three went for touchdowns of 24, 36 and 72 yards. Locke is 4-4-1 overall, 3-2 in league play. Narbonne is 2-7, 1-4.

Manual Arts 14, Palisades 3--Herman Nash ran for 122 yards in 14 carries and threw a touchdown pass as the Toilers defeated the Dolphins to win the Crosstown League title at Manual Arts. On a halfback option play, Nash connected with Doyle Walker for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave Manual Arts a 6-0 lead. After a Palisades field goal, Charles Jacobs returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give Manual Arts a 14-3 halftime lead. Ronnie Poole intercepted two Palisades passes in the second half to preserve the win. Manual Arts is 6-2, 5-0. Palisades, also playoff-bound, is 5-3-1, 3-1-1.

Lincoln 39, Verdugo Hills 15--The Tigers amassed 581 total yards, including 401 rushing, to bury Verdugo Hills in a Northern League game at Verdugo Hills. Tailback Turai Blanche had 17 carries for 206 yards and a touchdown, while fullback Steve Silva had 15 carries for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns. Blanche’s touchdown came on a 63-yard run. Silva scored on runs of 3, 2, and 6 yards. Blanche has 763 yards for the season. Ricky Chavarria completed 6 of 13 passes for 82 yards and 1 touchdown, a 10-yard scoring pass to Emilio Mendoza. Lincoln is 5-4 overall, 4-1 in league play. Verdugo Hills is 1-8, 1-4.

Southern Section Nogales 17, Los Altos 14--Paul Green completed a 65-yard touchdown pass play to Richard Witherspoon with 5:54 remaining to give Nogales the win over the Sierra League champion at Los Altos. Jeff Bailey saved the victory 37 seconds later when he stripped the ball from a Los Altos receiver, and teammated Kevin Griffin recovered it at the Nogales 17. Sophomore running back Daryl Green led Nogales with 150 yards in 27 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run. Los Altos quarterback Darren DeSpain completed only 7 of 18 passes for 133 yards and no touchdowns. Los Altos, The Times’ 10th-ranked team, is 9-1, 4-1. Nogales is 7-3, 3-2.

Eisenhower 31, Colton 21--Daryl McChristian scored three second-half touchdowns at Colton to lead Eisenhower to a second-place finish in the Citrus Belt League. Colton’s George Hemingway, the Southern Section’s leading rusher, gained 158 yards in 28 carries, despite sitting out most of the second half with a Charley horse. Hemingway finished the regular season with 2,022 yards in 251 carries. Eisenhower’s record is 8-2 overall and 6-1 in league play. Colton is 7-3, 5-2.

Hart 51, Schurr 27--Quarterback Jim Bonds finished the regular season as the Southern Section’s leading passer by completing 22 of 28 passes for 303 yards and touchdowns of 26, 16, 6, and 3 yards to lead the Indians to the Foothill League title at Montebello High. In 10 games, Bonds has completed 147 of 227 passes for 2,336 yards and 31 touchdowns. The game was tied, 21-21, at halftime, but Hart scored on its first two possessions of the second half and was never headed. Andy Iacenda ran for 3 Hart touchdowns, while David Lee had 7 receptions for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Chris Hite had 7 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Schurr quarterback Joe Cypert threw touchdown passes of 80 yards to both Tim Whitfield and Ray Galaze. Hart, which has won nine in a row since a season-opening loss to Canyon Country Canyon, finished the regular season 9-1, 5-0. Schurr is 6-3, 3-2.

Antelope Valley 40, Saugus 14--Quarterback Ron Whipple completed 10 of 14 passes for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns, and running back Eric Mortensen had 70 yards and 2 touchdowns in 12 carries for Antelope Valley at College of the Canyons. The Golden League champions finished the season 8-1-1 overall, 5-0 in league play. Saugus is 0-9, 0-5.

Redondo 27, Miraleste 8--Wide receiver Mike Stone caught touchdown passes of 13 and 38 yards from Scott Yessner to lead the Sea Hawks to the Pioneer League win at Miraleste. Yessner completed 8 of 16 passes for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mike Silane, who had 134 yards in 15 carries, scored Miraleste’s only touchdown on an 8-yard run in the second quarter. In 10 games, Silane rushed for 1,369 yards in 203 carries. Redondo, which finished 8-2 overall and 4-1 in league play, is assured of a playoff spot. Miraleste, at 2-2-1 and 6-2-2, can only hope for an at-large berth in the Northwestern Conference.

San Maria 15, Righetti 3--Jackman LeBlanc raced 29 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Santa Maria all the margin it needed and insure a second-place finish in the Northern League. LeBlanc finished with 135 yards in 24 carries, bringing his season total to 1,135 yards. Linebacker Sean Pate had 10 tackles for San Maria. The win, at Santa Maria High, improved the Saints’ record to 9-1, 3-1. Righetti finished 5-4, 1-3.

Ramona 40, Hemet 6--The Rams, under Coach Don Markham, rolled up 338 yards rushing, including Milo Liaga’s 138 yards in 12 carries, as Ramona clinched the Ivy league championship at Hemet. Five different players scored for Ramona, including quarterback Mark Dowd, who ran for 2 touchdowns. Ramona is 9-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. Hemet is 5-2, 7-2-1.

Bishop 35, Paraclete 14--Wide receiver Keith Richmond scored twice in the Desert-Inyo Large League game at Antelope Valley College, once on a 73-yard pass play from Tim Crowl and again on a 10-yard reverse. Richmond has scored 120 points in 10 games. League champion Bishop is 9-0 overall and 5-0 in league play. Paraclete is 7-3, 2-3.

Arroyo 42, El Monte 13--Fernando Zabala scored six touchdowns on runs of 2, 16, 18, 23, 55, and 58 yards, while ammassing 266 yards on 17 carries in the Mission Valley League game at Arroyo. The 5-8 junior has rushed for 1,120 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. Arroyo finished the regular season 8-2 and was 5-0 in league play. El Monte is 4-5, 3-1.
