Middleweight Bout Offers Nunn Title Shot and Ramos, Respect

For all Michael Nunn has accomplished in boxing--19 wins in 19 pro fights, including 12 knockouts, after a 168-8 mark as an amateur and a spot as an alternate on the 1984 U.S. Olympic team--he has never held a title.

Nor has he ever gone 12 rounds.

Both could happen tonight. Indeed, one may be necessary to gain the other.

Nunn, the North Hollywood middleweight ranked 10th by the World Boxing Assn., will meet Alex Ramos (26-4-2, 20 knockouts) of Bell in tonight’s 12-round main event at The Country Club in Reseda.

At stake will be Ramos’ California middleweight title.

Ramos has something to gain tonight as well--respect. He lost some when he underwent serious drug and alcohol problems, but, under manager Jimmy Montoya, Ramos has won four of his last five fights, including a knockout victory over Fred Hutchings in August to win the state title. Now, Ramos would like to show he belongs among the nation’s top ten middleweights.

Tonight’s fight card will be nationally televised by the ESPN cable network. That will mean exposure for some other fighters as well.

On the undercard, Jorge Cazares (8-2-1, five knockouts) of Blythe will meet Frank Fazio (10-4, two knockouts) of San Jose in a six-round junior lightweight match.

The rest of the fights will be four-rounders. Dino Garza, younger brother of former World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Jaime Garza, will make his pro debut tonight. The North Hollywood fighter will face Russell Mosley (3-1, one knockout) of San Diego in a junior lightweight bout.

Welterweights Terry Norris (3-0, one knockout) of San Diego and Carlos Gutierrez (2-2, one knockout) of Culver City; heavyweights Orlin Norris (4-1, two knockouts) of San Diego and King David Smith (13-26-5) of Los Angeles; middleweights Tino Leon (3-0-1, two knockouts) of Fresno and Tim Holt (1-1, one knockout) of Los Angeles, and bantamweights Oscar Chavarria (2-1, one knockout) of Bell and Danny Garcia (2-1, two knockouts) of East Los Angeles will also be on the card.

First fight is scheduled for 6 p.m.
