San Diego Section Playoff Roundup : Bishop’s Crockett Will Meet Burgos for Girls’ Tennis Title

Shannon Crockett of Bishop’s High School will play Mimi Burgos of University City for the San Diego Section individual singles championship at noon today at Bishop’s. On an adjacent court, Bonita Vista’s Connie Carbone and Karen Price will face Francoise Barton and Hana Ohkawa of La Jolla for the section doubles title.

Crockett, the No. 2-seeded player in the singles competition, advanced to the finals Friday with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 3-seeded Veena Prabhakar of Bonita Vista. Also Friday, No. 4-seeded Burgos defeated No. 6-seeded Laura Richards of Vista, 6-1, 6-4.

Carbone and Price, the No. 1-seeded team, advanced to the finals Friday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the No. 3 duo of Julie Sisel and Corrina Roth of Fallbrook. No. 2-seeded Barton and Ohkawa beat the No. 4-seeded team, Bonita Vista’s Karen Macaulay and Renee Pirott. 7-5, 6-2.

CROSS-COUNTRY

San Diego High’s Marc Davis ran a 15:21 over 3.1 miles and Torrey Pines’ Nicole Nugent ran 16:15 over 2.7 miles to lead their respective teams in qualifying for the section cross-country championships at Escondido’s Kit Carson Park. The finals will be held Wednesday also at Kit Carson Park.

Qualifying boys’ teams are: San Pasqual, El Camino, Bishops’, Mar Vista, USDHS, Ramona, Escondido, St. Augustine, Coronado and Army-Navy in the 1-A; Valhalla, San Diego, Orange Glen, La Jolla, Serra, Fallbrook, Bonita Vista, Castle Park in the 2-A, and Poway, Monte Vista, El Capitan, Helix, Vista, Santana, Mt. Carmel and Patrick Henry in the 3-A.

Qualifying girls’ teams are: Ramona, Coronado, Escondido, USDHS, La Jolla, El Camino, Mar Vista, Mission Bay in the 1-A; Valhalla, Bonita Vista, Crawford, Fallbrook, San Pasqual, Hilltop, Orange Glen and Grossmont in the 2-A, and Santana, Mt. Carmel, Helix, Point Loma, Vista, El Capitan, Poway and Mira Mesa in the 3-A.
