Orange County Roundup : North Meets South in All-Star Wrestling

The Orange County North-South All-Star wrestling match, featuring the county’s top high school senior wrestlers, will be Saturday night at 7:30 at Anaheim’s Canyon High School.

Highlights will include the 154-pound match between Loara’s Brian Malavar and Capistrano Valley’s David Hynan, and the heavyweight match between Savanna’s Tom Osendorf and Pacifica’s Steve Palczewski.

Both are rematches of Southern Section Masters Meet championship matches. Malavar defeated Hynan, 9-5, for the Masters title, but Hynan advanced further at the CIF state meet, in which he reached the quarterfinals. Osendorf defeated Palczewski, 11-2, and went on to place sixth in the state meet.

El Dorado’s Todd Tomazic, the state champion at 168 pounds and The Times’ Wrestler of the Year, meets Edison’s Robert Murray, who finished second in the 4-A meet and fifth at Masters.

Men’s and women’s tryouts for the U.S. Olympic Festival west volleyball teams will be held at Golden West College April 12.

Men’s tryouts are from 9 a.m. to noon, and women’s are from 1 to 4 p.m. To be eligible, players must be 20 or younger and cannot turn 21 in 1987.

There are 12 spots open on each team, which will participate in the Olympic Festival July 10-25 at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Former Rams Phil Olsen and Jack Youngblood and New York Giant quarterback Jeff Rutledge will participate in the sixth annual Rams basketball game April 11 at the University High School gymnasium in Irvine. Game time is 7 p.m.

The 10th annual Million Dollar World Championship April Fools outdoor racquetball tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at Orange Coast College.

Players may enter the singles and doubles divisions in skill levels from novice to open/professional.

The San Juan Racquet Club will sponsor a three-day tennis tournament this weekend, sanctioned by the U.S. Professional Tennis Assn.

California professionals will compete for $2,500 in prize money. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Capistrano Valley Child Development Program.
