Senior forwards Matt Bowley and Donna Pollema had a common goal: Both felt the pressure to win, and both helped their high school basketball teams do it.

For Bowley, of defending Small Schools champion Whitney High School of Cerritos, that meant playing with the same intensity he had as a junior when he was named the boys CIF Southern Section Small Schools Division Player of the Year.

For Pollema, winning became a vendetta after her junior season when heavily favored Cerritos Valley Christian High failed to defend its Southern Section 1-A Division title.

Both completed their goals in 1987. Whitney (25-3) repeated as champion and advanced to the championship game of the Division III CIF Southern California regionals. Bowley, although not repeating as player of the year, was one of three Wildcats named to the All-Southern Section Small Schools Division team.

Valley Christian (27-3) won the 1-A Division girls title and advanced to the championship game of the state CIF Division II. Pollema was named to the All-Southern Section 1-A Division girls team, along with teammate Kari Parriott, who was tabbed the division’s most valuable player.

The pair repeated on The Times All-Southeast basketball team. It is the third consecutive appearance on the team for Pollema and the second consecutive for Bowley.

They are two of 20 players to be honored Sunday at the annual Times basketball awards brunch.

Here is a rundown of the Southeast all-star teams:

BOYS

Corey Hoffert, California--He was the scrawny 15th man on the freshman team four years ago. This year he blossomed as a 6-foot-5 scoring machine who tallied 49 points in one game and averaged 18.5 points and 12 rebounds a game. He was voted co-MVP of the Whitmont League.

Tyler Austin, La Serna--One of only two underclassmen on the team, he shared MVP honors with Hoffert. The 6-foot-4 1/2 junior averaged 22.5 points and 11.2 rebounds a game from his forward position.

Corey Jennings, Norwalk--The 6-foot-4 center will enroll at Cerritos College in the fall after averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds a game for the second-place team from the Suburban League. He was an all-league choice.

Anthony Jenkins, Pius X--He makes his second consecutive appearance on the all-star team. The 6-foot-4 senior averaged 23.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots a game. He will attend the University of Washington.

Butch LeNoue, Schurr--The 5-foot-11 senior guard was a dead-eye from the perimeter. He averaged 17 points a game and is considering playing at Citrus College next year. He was a two-time All-Foothill League choice who helped the Spartans tie Burbank for the league title.

Mike Goodcase--The consummate prep player. He did it all for Whittier Christian, which advanced to the Southern Section’s Division 1-A title game for the second consecutive year. Coincidentally, this is the second appearance on The Times team for the 6-foot-2 senior. He carries a 4.0 grade-point average and has been accepted at Stanford and UC Irvine but may play baseball instead of basketball.

Erik Martin, Whittier Christian--The 6-foot-4 1/2 Covina resident led the Heralds in scoring (21 points a game) and rebounding (14 a game).

Matt Bowley, Whitney--The 6-foot-2 senior forward helped Whitney repeat as Small Schools Division champion. He averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds a game. The Cypress resident has not decided which community college he will attend.

Clay Schwartz, Downey--The 6-foot-6 center helped Downey get off to an 13-0 start in the preseason and was named the MVP in three preseason tournaments. He averaged 21.6 points a game, although Downey failed to advance to the playoffs.

Danny Lizotte, Bell--The only City Section player on the all-star team averaged 20.5 points a game as the Eagles won the Eastern League championship. “He’s the big reason we took the league title,” said Coach Rod Tange of the 6-foot guard. It was Bell’s first title since 1969.

GIRLS

Cindy Vyskocil, Whittier Christian--The 6-foot-2 senior forward/center, who will attend Arizona State, makes her third consecutive appearance on the team. As a junior she led the Southern Section in scoring, but this season dropped to third. Still, she averaged 28 points a game.

Kari Parriott, Valley Christian--She is headed for Oregon State after a senior season in which she led the area in scoring average (29 points) and also managed 14 rebounds a contest. The 6-foot-3 center was named the Southern Section’s 1-A Division player of the year.

Donna Pollema, Valley Christian--The 6-foot-2 forward makes her third consecutive appearance on the all-star team. In that span Valley Christian won two Southern Section titles and advanced to the semifinals once. Although tall, she mastered the 15-foot shot and averaged 18.4 points during the regular season. She grabbed 12.5 rebounds a game.

Tricia Reitsma, Valley Christian--The 5-foot-8 guard made the passes and ran the offense that opened up Pollema and Parriott inside. A controlled, yet intent player, she had eight assists a game.

Molly Wampler, Gahr--The 6-foot-1 1/2 center returns to the team for the second consecutive year. She averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds a game for the Gladiators.

Cheryl Humphrey, Gahr--At 5-feet-3, she is the smallest player on the all-star team. She averaged 7 points, 4 steals and 4 assists a game.

Rachel Daugherty, Whittier--The 5-foot-9 senior was voted the MVP of the Whitmont League after leading Whittier to the league title. She averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3.5 steals a contest. Daugherty is “an excellent outside shooter,” said Bell Gardens Coach Gilberto Limon.

Jeanne Amos, Bell Gardens--The only sophomore to make the team. “An excellent post player,” said Whittier head Coach Lance Young. The 5-foot-7 forward averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds a game. She also runs cross-country and is the defending frosh-soph track champion in three events.

Bridgette Eaves, South Gate--At 5-feet-10, she averaged 17.4 points and 18 rebounds a game for the Rams and shared MVP honors in the Eastern League with Martha Ramirez of Garfield. She scored 27 points in an opening-round game of the City Section 2-A Division playoffs.

Trish Gibson, La Mirada--Another player making her third appearance on the team. The 6-foot-3 center averaged 20.2 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Matadores, who finished second to Artesia in the Suburban League. She has signed to attend Loyola Marymount University in the fall.
