Track Roundup : Olson Vaults to Top of List, Clears 19-0

Billy Olson of the Pacific Coast Club cleared 19 feet inch in the pole vault, the best outdoor mark in the United States this year, to win the event Saturday in the Southern Methodist Invitational at Dallas.

The previous best mark was 18-9 by Doug Fraley of Fresno State.

Brad Pursley, a former teammate of Olson’s at Abilene Christian, was second at 18-8 1/2.

Olson is the U.S. indoor record holder at 19-5 1/2.

Harvey Glance won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.0 seconds. The mark was hand-timed. Daron Council of Auburn was second in the same time. Council came back in the 200 meters to edge Roy Martin of SMU in a wind-aided 20.0.

Diana Clements of USC set a school record in the women’s javelin with a throw of 164 feet to win the event in an invitational meet at Cromwell Field.

Clements broke her own record of 157-1 set earlier this year.

LaTanya Sheffield, former San Diego State star, won the 400-meter hurdles in 56.49, a Cromwell Field record.

In the Dogwood Relays at Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Franks of Athletics West won the 400 meters in 45.3 seconds. Terry McDaniel of Tennessee was second in 45.90 and Sunder Nix of Athletics West third in 46.15.
