Controversy Goes From ‘Nightline’ to ‘Hotline’

Did you really expect Vin Scully to say anything meaningful on the radio when he reported the Campanis firing? When Garvey fought Sutton, Scully was mute. On the eve of the players’ strike in 1981, Scully was silent. His entire career has been built on safe platitudes.

He did call the ABC show “Hotline” instead of “Nightline.” That’s as close to controversy as the Dodgers’ golden-throated mouthpiece will ever come.
