Carlqvist and Thorpe Score Motocross Wins

Hakan Carlqvist of Sweden and David Thorpe of Britain had first-place finishes Sunday in the two runs for the third stage of the World 500cc Motocross Championship.

After 6 of 22 runs, Thorpe leads with 108 points, followed by Carlqvist with 75, Belgian Georges Jobe with 61, Finland’s Kurt Lundqvist with 54 and Britain’s Kurt Nicholl with 48.

About 5,000 fans braved high winds and rain to watch Carlqvist, riding a Kawasaki, win the first heat in 45 minutes, 35.09 seconds.

Nicholl, also on a Kawasaki, was second in 45:45.35 and third was Austrian Heinz Kinigadner, on a KTM, in 45:53.18. Thorpe, on a Honda, was fourth in 45:56.44.

In the second run, Thorpe was first in 46:10.89. Kees van der Ven of the Netherlands, on a KTM, was second in 46:22.60. Billy Liles of the United States, on a Kawasaki, was third in 46:25.49.
