The St. Francis charity kitchen in Santa Cruz will feed the needy, but not Deadheads--followers of the Grateful Dead. St. Francis worker Michael Grabianowski claims that, although Deadheads have money to spend, they “just try to find places where they can eat for free.” He said as many as 100 fans eat free lunches at the kitchen when the San Francisco band plays in the area. The ban starts May 11; the Grateful Dead is to play at nearby Laguna Seca on May 9. Kitchen director Peter Carota added that he will interview diners to ensure that the kitchen is helping the truly needy--and will keep a sharp eye out for those wearing smiling skull emblems, the band’s logo.
