National League Roundup : Eric Davis Injures Left Shoulder; Reds Lose, 5-4

The Cincinnati Reds lost more than a ballgame Friday night at St. Louis. They also lost their star, Eric Davis.

Davis, the Reds’ center fielder, jammed his left shoulder making a diving catch in the fourth inning of the Cardinals’ 5-4 victory.

The severity of Davis’ injury was not determined. More X-rays will be taken today.

Davis, who is batting .358 and leading the league in home runs (15) and runs batted in (38), injured himself while robbing Terry Pendleton of an extra base hit with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning. As it was, a run scored and another came home on a single by Jack Clark to give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead.

The Reds rallied to knock out Danny Cox (4-1) in the ninth. But with the tying run on second base, Todd Worrell got the final out to keep the Cardinals on top in the East.

Worrell, the top reliever and National League Rookie of the Year last season, has earned saves in the last three Cardinal games. However, he had a poor start and, despite six saves, has an earned-run average of about 9.00.

Pendleton and Ozzie Smith each drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who are 19-13 despite having six players on the disabled list, including catcher Tony Pena and top pitcher John Tudor.

New York 8, San Francisco 3--Sid Fernandez, one of the Mets’ few dependable pitchers this season, pitched no-hit ball for five innings at New York but fell and was hurt while making his first warmup pitch in the sixth. He suffered a sprained left knee and will be out indefinitely.

Fernandez (4-2) also hurt himself in the fourth inning while sliding into third base on a triple, and his fall on the mound aggravated the earlier injury. Darryl Strawberry (who entered the game in a 3-for-33 slump), Len Dykstra and Howard Johnson hit home runs for the Mets, who are 15-18.

Reliever Roger McDowell, in only his second appearance since coming off the disabled list, pitched three scoreless innings to earn his first save.

Chicago 3, Houston 1--Greg Maddux allowed three hits in 7 innings and singled in the winning run as the Cubs improved to 14-5 on the road.

Lee Smith, who has 11 saves in 12 chances, retired the last four Astros.

Maddux (3-2) gave up a run in the first.

Philadelphia 7, San Diego 4--After criticizing management and then apologizing at Philadelphia, Mike Schmidt contributed to a five-run fifth inning that sparked the Phillies.

Schmidt doubled in one run and scored another in the rally that overcame a 2-1 deficit.

Before the game, Schmidt apologized for knocking the front office, but then said there were Phillies’ officials who lacked pride in the organization. With a 13-20 record, the Phillies, despite 12 homers and 34 RBIs by Schmidt, are last in the East.

Atlanta 9, Pittsburgh 4--Ozzie Virgil hit a three-run home run to climax a six-run eighth inning at Pittsburgh that enabled the Braves to end the Pirates’ four-game winning streak. Virgil has five home runs in the last four games.

The Braves sent nine men to the plate in the big inning, but only three of them had hits.
