El Segundo, St. Bernard, Chadwick and Avalon advanced to Friday quarterfinals with victories Tuesday in CIF baseball playoffs.

El Segundo, an 8-1 winner over Buena, plays at third-seeded North High of Riverside at 3 p.m. in 3-A. For the Eagles, 22-9, junior right-hander Heath Jones not only pitched a five-hitter at Buena for his 11th victory but added his ninth home run of the season. Jeremy Varner and Dan Parente also homered. North High is 23-5.

St. Bernard, second-seeded in 1-A, is now the highest remaining seed among 1-A teams. The Vikings improved to 19-4 with an 11-6 victory over Bloomington on Tuesday while top seed Norte Vista fell to Temple City, 11-5. St. Bernard will play host to Valley Christian at 3 p.m. The Vikings won easily Tuesday, building an 11-2 lead as Tim Williams won his eighth game and hit his 13th home run.

In the Small Schools Division, Chadwick jumped on Pioneer Baptist quickly Tuesday, scoring six runs in the first inning on the way to a 9-1 victory, and Avalon got a no-hitter from Isaac Felix to beat Woodcrest Christian, 2-0. Chadwick advanced behind Jeff Kaufman, who won his eighth game. The Dolphins, 13-7, will play at Leffingwell Christian at 3 p.m. Avalon scored both runs Tuesday on throwing errors while Felix was striking out 11 to win his seventh game. Avalon, 13-5, plays Rosamond at home at 3 p.m.

In girls softball, Miraleste defeated Maranatha, 2-1, to advance to Friday’s 3 p.m. quarterfinal at Riverside Notre Dame, the top seed in 1-A.

The Redondo Beach Yacht Club will offer the third of five one-day sailing seminars on June 13 at the club’s temporary clubhouse near D Dock in King Harbor Marina. The class, open to novices who have some experience or who have attended previous seminars, will cover rules of the road, charting and navigation. Registration begins at 9 a.m., preceding morning lectures and in-water instruction after lunch. Cost of the seminar is $25. Reservations are required. Call 374-0741.

A free seminar on “Coaching in the South Bay” will be held Tuesday at Mira Costa High School. Teacher-coach Bob Hunter will focus on how to qualify for a coaching position in the South Bay Union High School District, touching on effective coaching, responsibilities of coaching and handling injuries. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 1 on the Manhattan Beach campus.

The Gardena Recreation and Human Services Department will sponsor the National Youth Sports Coaches Assn. certification program beginning at 9 a.m. June 6 at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1700 West 162nd St. The class is free to the city’s youth coaches and will deal with skills and drills, first aid, psychology of coaching, player-coach relationships, coach-parent relationships and developing a practice regimen.

Alumni from Aviation and Redondo Union high schools will play an annual full-contact football game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Redondo High. The game will benefit the athletic program at Redondo and the Aviation Alumni Fund for scholarships. Admission is $5. A reunion will follow the game.
