Southern Section 2-A Softball : Another Boyd No-Hitter Is Routine for Woodbridge

Share

After two Southern Section 2-A playoff games, pitcher Tiffany Boyd of Woodbridge High School still has not allowed a hit. No wonder people expect a lot from her.

“Tiffany wasn’t at her best today,” said Sue Hall, Woodbridge coach. “She can be more overpowering, but maybe Mission Viejo’s record had something to do with that.”

Less than Boyd’s best was good enough for 10 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory Wednesday at Mission Viejo. She allowed only one batter to reach base, that coming on a walk in the first inning to Leanne Davis.

Boyd had struck out 17 in no-hitting St. Anthony of Long Beach in a first-round playoff game last Friday.

Boyd (14-6) has eight no-hitters for the season.

Woodbridge scored in the second inning Wednesday. Shannon Patton led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Charisse Kinno then lined a triple into right-center field off Erin Fitzgerald (5-3) to score Patton.

Woodbridge (18-6), seeded fourth, will advance to a quarterfinal Friday against Canyon Country.

“I’d give all my no-hitters back for a chance to win the championship,” said Boyd, who allowed only one ball hit out of the infield. “As a freshman we lost in the semifinals and last year we were runner-up. This year we want to win it all and won’t settle for anything less.”

Mission Viejo, the South Coast league champion, ended its season 15-10.

Laguna Hills 1, Whittier 0--Dawn Roberts (22-6) pitched a one-hitter and the Hawks (22-6) scored in the seventh at Whittier. Leslie Perkins singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Kelli Besser, who moved to second on an error. Lori Sommers singled to score Besser.
