Raiders : Plunkett Has Agreed to Terms and Is Due to Report Tonight

Share

Jim Plunkett and the Raiders have agreed to terms on his ’87 contract. He is due to report tonight, after which the team will begin to find out what he can do for them in his 39th year.

At 38, when he became the No. 1 quarterback for the last six games of the season, Plunkett earned a base salary of $600,000.

The Raiders are thought to want one veteran quarterback behind Rusty Hilger and to prefer Plunkett. There has been speculation among the Raiders throughout the off-season that Marc Wilson will be moved, or waived and paid off. However, if Plunkett’s availability is in question, the Raiders may rediscover a need for Wilson.

And right now, Plunkett’s availability is in question. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right rotator cuff after last season and will be brought back slowly.

“I feel we have to continue to rehab it, until he’s ready to go,” Coach Tom Flores said Saturday.

“We should have a pretty good feeling in two to three weeks. I haven’t seem him throw in months. He had to get over a hump. Two months ago, he wasn’t over the hump. A month ago, he feels he got over the hump.”

Wilson is also due in today, as the quarterback watch begins.

Raider Notes The Raider rookies will scrimmage the Dallas Cowboys’ rookies today at 2 p.m. in Thousand Oaks. . . . There won’t be a No. 1 pick on the lot. The Raiders’ John Clay and the Cowboys’ Danny Noonan are still unsigned, as is the Raider No. 2, Bruce Wilkerson. . . . The Raiders will start Rusty Hilger at quarterback but will give more work to Ed Luther and Steve Beuerlein. The Cowboys will start Fresno State’s Kevin Sweeney.
