No. 2 draft pick Lou Brock signed a four-year contract with the Chargers Saturday and was then quickly escorted to the playing field.

Meanwhile, the agent for unsigned No. 1 pick Rod Bernstine, Ralph Cindrich, said his client might join Brock as early as today.

“We just ran out of time the other night,” Cindrich said in a telephone interview from Pittsburgh. “If we’d stayed around later (Friday night), maybe we could’ve gotten it done. I think it’s conceivable we could come in and reach a deal tomorrow. Really and truly.”

And Steve Ortmayer, the Charger director of football operations, said he planned on calling Cindrich late Saturday night.

“With Bernstine, (the problems) revolve more around structure than flat figures,” Ortmayer said.

In all, there were 76 Chargers--all dressed out in shoulder pads--on the UC San Diego practice fields in the first official workout of 1987. Newly acquired linebacker Chip Banks intercepted the first pass of the first 11-on-11 drill of the season.

And Brock, a cornerback, stole a pass as well. And you know all about Brock’s dad, who stole bases for the St. Louis Cardinals.

“My dad’s only advice was that if I ever had a chance to sign a pro contract, I should have a plan on what to do with the money,” said Brock, whose four-year deal was worth about $1.07 million. “He’s seen too many tragedies.”

Brock was joined Saturday by six other draft picks, all of whom signed either late Friday night or early Saturday morning. They are: wide receiver Jamie Holland (No. 7 pick), tackle Joe MacEsker (No. 8), linebacker Ron Brown (No. 9), running back/cornerback Thomas Wilcher (No. 10) and running back Marcus Greenwood (No. 13). Center Joe Goebel (No. 12) also signed, but didn’t practice Saturday for personal reasons, Ortmayer said.

Cornerback Nelson Jones (No. 5) had also agreed to sign, but Jones’ agent, Alan Herman of New York, got stuck at Laguardia Airport and couldn’t make it to San Diego. So Jones missed the workout. Also, Ortmayer initially thought he had reached agreement with safety Anthony Anderson (No. 11), but there is a snag in negotiations.

The only other rookies to miss Saturday’s workout were Karl Wilson, the No. 3 pick who is represented by former Kansas City lineman Tom Condon, and quarterback Mark Vlasic, the No. 4 pick out of Iowa.

The following players failed their physicals Saturday and were waived:

--Center David Diaz-Infante (leg problems), a free agent out of San Jose State.

--Ken O’Neal (knee problems), a tight end from Idaho State. O’Neal had been signed Saturday because the Chargers were short on tight ends.

--Joe Pellegrini (assortment of injuries), a center/guard from Harvard.

Also, running back Clifton Stroughter was waived, but in his case, he asked to be released. Stroughter, a free agent running back from Illinois, rushed for 3,124 yards and scored 54 touchdowns in 12 games last year for the Nottingham Hoods in Great Britain. But Stroughter had a history of head injuries and decided to quit football.

In other moves, three Chargers were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list: receiver David Williams (hamstring), defensive end Keith Baldwin (knee) and guard/tackle Steve Knight (hamstring).

The following free agents were signed Saturday:

--Kevin Ferguson, a 6-3, 228-pound tight end from Virginia

--Francesco Guizzetti, a 6-3, 263-pound defensive end from the University of Milan.

According to Ortmayer, Guizzetti played last year for the Milano Rhinos and was reported to be “the best Italian defensive lineman.” Guizzetti tried getting a tryout with the Raiders last year, but the Raiders told him to get bigger and faster.

The following veterans signed contracts Saturday:

--Backup quarterback Mark Herrmann, who worked out Saturday.

--Guard/tackle Ken Dallafior, who will work out today.

Charger Notes Thomas Wilcher, the ninth-round pick from Michigan, was drafted as a running back, but is currently being tried at cornerback. Coach Al Saunders said they’ll see how he does and decide whether to keep him in the secondary. . . . Unsigned linebacker Billy Ray Smith showed up to watch Saturday’s workout and said a deal should be reached soon.
