Llamas, Seeded 32nd, Upsets Top Seed in Surf Tournament
Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach, the No. 32-seeded surfer, upset No. 1 seed Mike Lambrezsi of Carlsbad Saturday in the fifth round of the $1,200 Boarder Line tournament being held north of the San Clemente Pier.
Eight other Orange County surfers were among the 16 that qualified for the quarterfinals, which begin at 9 a.m. today.
Andy Fomenko (No. 6 seed) of San Clemente, Craig Comen (No. 7) of Huntington Beach, John Parmenter (No. 14) of Huntington Beach, Jim Hogan (No. 17) of Capistrano Beach and unseeded Chris Mauro of South Laguna, Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach, George Hulse and Chris Billy of San Juan Capistrano also advanced.
In the long board division, top-seeded Herbie Fletcher of San Clemente and No. 2 seeded Israel Paskowitz of San Clemente advanced. Brian Kurt of Capistrano Beach, Jonathan Paskowitz of San Clemente and David Nuuhiwa of Huntington Beach moved to the second round, which starts at 7 a.m. today.
In the body boarding division, defending champion Mike Stewart of Hawaii advanced to the second round as did Bill Hebner, Chris Cunningham and J.P. Patterson of Huntington Beach. The second round starts at 8 a.m. today.
