CLU Winds Up Investigation of Football Team

An internal investigation by Cal Lutheran into alleged violations of NCAA rules by the football team is near completion, Athletic Director Bob Doering said Wednesday.

“We’ve just about got all the facts gathered and we’ll be sending a report to the NCAA,” said Doering, who declined to elaborate on details of the report.

A prospective Cal Lutheran quarterback admitted last month to practicing with the team during spring workouts before he was enrolled, an apparent violation of an NCAA rule that prohibits tryouts. The quarterback, Jim Bees of San Bernardino Valley College, since has accepted a full scholarship to Cal Lutheran.

The tryout was held under the supervision of Coach Bob Shoup, who has maintained that the NCAA rule pertaining to tryouts is unclear. Doering refused to comment on the possibility of Shoup being punished by the university if a violation was found to have occurred.

“We haven’t finished that part of the report yet,” Doering said. “I’m not going to say anything more on that because I don’t believe in handling internal problems through the press.”

Shoup has been coach at Cal Lutheran since the school launched its football program 26 years ago. He has a lifetime record of 174-68-6. The Kingsmen were 3-8 last season.
