Community College Basketball Roundup : Rancho Santiago Beats Chaffey to Advance to Grossmont Final

Ken Ammann made two free throws with seven seconds left to help Rancho Santiago to a 75-72 victory over Chaffey in a semifinal of the Grossmont tournament Friday at Grossmont.

Ammann, who finished with 21 points, was fouled while bringing the ball upcourt and made both shots to give Rancho Santiago a 75-72 lead. Chaffey missed two three-point attempts as time ran out.

Ralph Garcia had 21 points and teammates Alonzo Jamison and Tony Smalley had 10 each for Rancho Santiago, which will play Fullerton in the championship game tonight at 7. Fullerton defeated Phoenix, 71-65.

In the Miles Eaton tournament:

Imperial Valley 69, Orange Coast 62--Robert Cantrall scored 14 and Brad Meyer scored 12 for Imperial Valley, which plays Long Beach tonight in the championship at 8 p.m.

Dave Miles scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for Orange Coast (4-3).

In the Antelope Valley tournament:

Cypress 101, Oxnard 85--Jeff Green scored a career-high 26 points to lead Cypress to its seventh consecutive victory this season. Chris Bordowski had 18 and Jim Sammon 10 for Cypress, which plays Edwards Air Force Base team at 2:15 today for the championship.

Sequoias 85, Golden West 79--Steve Moser scored 16 points and Elbert Davis 14 but Golden West (5-3) was eliminated from the tournament.

In nonconference games:

Compton 69, Saddleback 68--Vincent Smalls scored 17 points but was ejected with nine minutes left for unsportsmanlike conduct as Compton went on to win at home.

Gilbert Miller scored 31 points and Delwaun Young 21 for Compton. Saddleback (3-3) had the ball with seven seconds left but missed two shots as time ran out.

In the Cypress women’s tournament:

Mt. San Antonio 78, Orange Coast 70--Freshman Gilly Powell scored a single-game record 37 points but OCC lost in overtime.

L.A. Valley 80, Cypress 71--Vicky Silva scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds but Cypress lost.
