Public health officials said 102 people died of AIDS in San Francisco in November and 159 new cases were reported, down slightly from October. The figures included many deaths and cases that occurred before November but were added to the totals to reflect a broader definition of acquired immune deficiency syndrome now used by the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. The new definition includes AIDS dementia, wasting and some infections previously attributed to ARC, or AIDS-related complex. Since 1981, AIDS has claimed 2,458 lives in San Francisco and 4,111 cases have been reported, officials said. In October, health officials reported 122 deaths from AIDS and 171 new cases, also under the new definition.
