Tomba, Not Down for Long, Rebounds to Lead Italy’s 1-2 Slalom Finish

Italy’s Alberto Tomba, who on Saturday had his four-race winning streak broken when he fell in the first heat of a giant slalom, came back Sunday to lead a 1-2 Italian sweep in a men’s slalom at Kranjska Gora, Yugoslavia, and improve his overall lead in the World Cup ski standings.

The victory, Tomba’s fifth this season, gave him 125 points, 34 ahead of Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland.

Zurbriggen, the defending World Cup champion, placed a surprising fourth in an event that is not his favorite. Richard Prammoton finished second, and Austrian Guenther Mader was third.

Tomba, starting in the second group with No. 16, was timed in 1 minute 46.35 seconds. Tomba, who turned 21 on Saturday, said, “I feel like celebrating my birthday all over again tonight.”
