PREP SIGNINGS IN ORANGE COUNTY : Titans Hope Newest 21 Can Help in Hurry

Cal State Fullerton signed 21 more players to national letters of intent Wednesday, bringing its total football signings to 28.

Among the three high school players who signed with Fullerton is Mike Kent, a 6-foot 7-inch, 208-pound tight end from Esperanza High School, whose brother Bob Kent also played for the Titans.

The great majority of players Fullerton signed are from community colleges--players Fullerton hopes can contribute immediately.

“These are all people we think can win for us,” said Gene Murphy, Titan coach. “The fact that we have so many (community college players) will allow us to have an intense preseason orientation. . . . One thing about high school kids is you bring them in and give them a basic understanding of your program. These junior college kids have to play for us.”

Fullerton, after losing the core of its experienced offensive line last season, emphasized the offensive line in recruiting. The Titans got nine offensive linemen, including three tight ends.

The Titans signed two community college first-team All-Americans--Russ Oleyer, a linebacker from the College of the Sequoias, and Dan Speltz, a quarterback from El Camino College.

Speltz, who is already attending Fullerton, is one of seven players who signed on the earlier signing date for players who already had earned their community college degrees.

“They look good on paper,” Murphy said. “We’ll have to see next fall.”
