College Roundup : Chapman Ends Losing Streak With Tennis Victory

The Chapman College tennis team, ranked No. 1 in Division II, snapped a three-match losing streak Tuesday by defeating UC Riverside, 7-2, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Riverside.

Chapman (16-10, 8-0) was led by No. 1 singles player Miles Walker, who defeated Riverside’s Nick Mateljan, 6-3, 6-4. Walker is 30-8 in singles matches.

Olivier Amerlinck, Chapman’s No. 2 singles player, defeated Riverside’s Otis Allmon, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

In Southern California Volleyball Conference action:

UC Irvine 3, Chapman 1--UC Irvine clinched the No. 1 seeding in the conference tournament at UC San Diego on April 22 by defeating host Chapman, 13-15, 15-11, 15-10, 15-12. Irvine (5-14, 4-1) was led Brian Kehe, who had 22 kills and Dave Pettker, who had 18. Chapman (10-10, 2-3) was led by Kurt Dumm, who had 19 kills and Erich Schlitz, who had 16.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Azusa Pacific 5, Southern California College 3--Todd Bush struck out two, walked none and gave up five hits in 8 innings to lead Azusa Pacific over host SCC. The Vanguards (15-21-1, 8-7) scored two runs in the ninth, but the rally came up short. Ralph Acosta homered for Azusa Pacific.

In nonconference baseball:

USIU 13, Chapman 9--Chapman out-hit USIU, 15-12, but left 17 runners on base in the game at USIU. The Panthers (20-18-1) left the bases loaded in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Chris Cutliff went 3 for 5 with one RBI and Tony Gardea went 3 for 5, including a double, and had two RBIs.

UC Irvine 3, U. San Diego 2--Jeff Oberdank led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to start UC Irvine’s winning rally. Tracy Shanahan followed Oberdank with a single to right to put runners on first and third, so John Seeburger was intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Jay Hawthorne. Hawthorne lined a single down the left field line to give Irvine (24-20-1) the victory over San Diego (17-24).
