Double Play
The other day we noted in passing that Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics was the last baseball manager to wear street clothes in the dugout. Several readers called to tell us that the distinction properly belonged to Burt Shotton of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
According to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., both Mack and Shotton managed through the 1950 season and share the honor of having been the last managers sensible enough to leave the uniforms to the players and wear more appropriate civilian clothing themselves.
